SINGAPORE: At least four taxi companies have said that they will extend a temporary surcharge hike for trips from Changi Airport until the end of the year.

Surcharges for taxi trips from Changi Airport were raised by S$3 on May 19, with the measure initially slated to remain in place until Jun 30, the airport said at the time.

However, Strides Taxi announced in a Facebook post on Thursday (Jun 23) that the temporary surcharge increase would now remain in place until Dec 31, 2022. ComfortDelGro Taxi did the same on Friday.

Prime Taxi also announced the extension on Friday in a notice in The Business Times, while Premier Taxis has a notice of the extension displayed on its website.

With the hike in place, the surcharge for taxi trips from 5pm to 11.59pm every day is S$8, while the surcharge for all other times is S$6.

Under normal circumstances, there is a S$5 surcharge for taxi trips from Changi Airport between 5pm and midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The surcharge for taxi trips at all other times is usually S$3.

The increased surcharge was implemented to "ensure a better supply of taxis" for passengers at the airport, Changi Airport said in a Facebook post last month.

According to the Land Transport Authority, taxi fares in Singapore are determined independently and privately by taxi companies.

Fare changes must be lodged in advance with the Public Transport Council, and commuters must be informed of such changes at least seven days before they are implemented.

CNA has contacted Changi Airport Group to ask if the increased surcharge has led to any improvement in the taxi situation at the airport.
