Migrant worker dies after being crushed by mobile crane parts; 27th workplace fatality this year

SINGAPORE: A 32-year-old migrant worker died on Wednesday (Jun 22) after he was crushed between parts of a mobile crane.

This was the 27th workplace fatality so far this year. There was a total of 37 for the whole of 2021.

In response to CNA's queries, a Ministry of Manpower (MOM) spokesperson said on Thursday that the "workplace accident" happened at 1 Mandai Quarry Road at around 10.15am.

The Indian worker was retrieving two shackles from a toolbox underneath the chassis of a mobile crane when the crane turned clockwise.

“His chest was crushed between the crane counterweights and the crane undercarriage,” said MOM.

The worker was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The workplace site is the address of the Home Team Tactical Centre, which houses training facilities for specialist units from the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force.

The man was an employee of Hwa Yang Engineering.

The occupier of the site is China Construction (South Pacific) Development and the developer of the site is the Singapore Police Force, said MOM.

The ministry said it is investigating the incident and has instructed the occupier to stop all lifting works at the worksite.

“As a general safety measure, physical barricades and warning signs should be put up when cranes are in operation, and all persons should be reminded to stay clear of such danger areas,” it added.
